Early U.S. History Curriculum

Junior High Early U.S. History
2.0 Credits
This class rotates with the Utah History requirement every other year.

This is a great foundational course where students learn to think about how society is put together, how human rights are defined, and how to responsibly stand up for injustice.

  • Students first study European theories of government by looking at the various types of monarchies and the ideas of the Enlightenment.  Students read the Second Treatise of Government by John Locke and discuss the principles of societies built on equal rights.
  • Students study the basics of the Reformation and gain understanding of the religious atmosphere that accompanies colonization of America.
  • Students study the events of the various colonies reading original source materials from many of the settlers themselves, learning the different purposes, cultures, motivations and styles of colonization in each colony.
  • Students study the events and ideas that led to the American Revolution including The Declaration of Independence and writings of Thomas Paine and the lives of many of the Founders.
  • Students study the events of the American Revolution including the major factors that led to American victory.  Students read The Crisis.
  • Students do in depth study of The Constitution of the United States of America including memorizing all the amendments.

The books we read and the writing we do focus on what it means to be a hero and the sacrifices it takes to stand up for what you believe. 

We read books like Huckleberry Finn, Warriors Don’t Cry, and Stargirl. The projects, essays and writings help students explore what it means to be a hero, the principles of how to responsibly rebel and stand up for what you believe, the sacrifice of leadership, and the traits of those who have demonstrated leadership in the past.  We also design activities to lead students to reflect on the uplifting influences that have helped shape who they are today.
